Rhoda Reynolds pension claim records

Myles and Rhoda Reynolds were enslaved at Rock Spring Plantation and married in 1849. 

After emancipation, Myles joined the United States Colored Troops and died of measles while serving during the war. In 1869, Rhoda applied for a window's pension in Stokes County, North Carolina. Those records provide details about the couple's life.

Myles Reynolds

Military Service

Myles Reynolds enrolled in Co. H of the 119th regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops on April 14, 1865 in Boone, North Carolina. He was mustered into service as a private on May 10, 1865,in Lexington, Kentucky. He was 42 years old.

His company was commanded by Capt. Evan D. Kennedy.

Physical description

He is described as eyes, hair, and complexion, Black. Height 5 feet, 7 inches.

Birthplace

Myles is recorded as born in Stokes County, North Carolina.

Death

The War Department's Surgeon General's office records show that Myles Reynolds' service was brief. Just six days after he was mustered into service, he was admitted to the U.S. General Hospital at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. on May 16, 1865, for treatment of *measles. He would die a few weeks later of on June 3, 1865. 

*(The U.S. Adjutant General reported he died of typhoid fever.)
