Homestead Artisan Series

The homestead artisan series will be held at the Reynolds Homestead Community Engagement Center in Critz. Participants will explore traditional and historic crafts through hands-on, beginner-friendly workshops. Each class highlights skills and practices rooted in the region’s past while offering a creative experience for today. All supplies are provided unless noted, and classes are taught by experienced local artisans.

Learn how to make a functional, hand whisk broom with Erin Simons of Laurel Ridge Studios. In this workshop you will learn traditional broom making techniques required to craft one turkey wing whisk broom and one cake tester. Crafted to create a fan shape, Turkey Wing Whisks are great tools for cleaning all types of areas: desks, kitchen tables, workbenches, fireplaces, and more! Cake Testers are made from the cut off, so that no material is wasted. 
NOTE: Please keep in mind, broom making requires manual dexterity in both hands and feet. Participants should feel comfortable using a blunt knife and lighter. This workshop is considered beginner to medium level friendly and is for participants 13 and older.

Join Janeise Harmon for a hands-on exploration of traditional craft in the Traditional Rag Rug Coasters on a Simple Loom class. Using simple looms and time-honored techniques, participants will create a unique set of coasters inspired by classic rag rug designs. Cotton rug warp and a variety of repurposed textiles will be provided in an array of colors, allowing each person to design something truly one of a kind. Janeise will guide you step-by-step, making this class perfect for beginners and experienced makers alike.

Join artist Grace Helms for a relaxed, hands-on painting experience designed for beginners and creatives alike. In this engaging class, you’ll learn basic acrylic painting skills while creating your own piece step-by-step. Grace will guide you through the process with live demonstrations and helpful tips, making it easy to follow along and build confidence. Spend a few enjoyable hours painting together in a supportive, welcoming environment—no prior experience needed!

Discover the art and alchemy of natural dyeing in the Indigo Shibori class with Jennifer Reis. In this immersive, hands-on experience, participants will learn how to prepare an indigo dye vat and explore a variety of traditional pattern-making techniques, including binding, stitching, and clamping. Jennifer will guide you through the full dyeing process—from creating designs to finishing your pieces—revealing the magic as fabric transforms in the indigo bath. Each participant will dye four napkins and one tea towel to take home, with additional scarves and tea towels available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own white or cream cotton or silk items to create truly personalized pieces.
